Lion’s mane

Lion’s Mane is an ancient mushroom originating from Asia. Its culinary and medicinal uses can be traced back through China, Japan, and India over thousands of years. Lion’s Mane has been known by various other names through its ancient history, from “monkey head mushroom” in China to “mountain monk mushroom” in Japan to “bearded tooth” and “pom-pom” mushroom in North America.

Lion’s Mane is found and sourced all over North America, Europe, and Asia, with different cultures using it in a variety of ways. It grows in the summer on hardwood and is often found on American beech trees. Research is linking Lion’s Mane mushrooms to a wide variety of mental and physical health benefits, leading to a rise in popularity for this fungus.

Benefits

Lion’s Mane is characterized as a functional mushroom for its vast array of potential health benefits. Before exploring Lion’s Mane’s potential and making it part of your daily routine, it’s essential to understand the potential benefits to your health and how to find a mushroom powder supplement that will be of high enough quality to actually deliver these benefits. These benefits include a nootropic with brain benefits, contains compounds for neurological health (Hericenones & Erinacines), has Nerve Growth Factor(NFG), helps memory and cognition, helps anxiety and mood, helps focus and mental energy, helps brain fog, helps sleep. It also helps with inflammation, heart health, digestive health, blood sugar balance, and immune system, and it benefits pets.

Cordyceps

Cordyceps mushrooms are parasitic fungi that include over 400 different species. They grow all over the world in countries like China, Japan, INdia, the United States, Austria, Peru, Bolivia and many more. There are two types of Cordyceps mushrooms that you can buy: Cordyceps sinensis and Cordyceps militaris. The most well-known species of Cordyceps mushrooms is Cordyceps sinensis. It mainly grows at high elevations in Tibet and the Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan, Qinghai and Gansu. It can also be found in India, Nepal, and Bhutan, but is less abundant there. Cordyceps militaris is known as Scarlet Club Fungus.

Benefits

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Cordyceps mushrooms are considered a very special tonic. Called Dōnɡ Chónɡ Xià Cǎo, these mushrooms were offered to the Emperor’s court and others among Chinese nobility. Traditionally it was used as a lung and kidney tonic, making it useful for respiratory complaints, physical tiredness, and for those with a weak constitution. Sexual function, libido, and performance are also keynotes for Cordyceps mushrooms’ traditional use.Supplements of Cordyceps mushrooms showed improved exercise performance in healthy older patients, as demonstrated by improved respiratory and metabolic functioning. Preliminary human and animal cell studies suggest Cordyceps may support healthy levels of inflammation and immune markers. Traditionally, Cordyceps mushrooms were used as an aphrodisiac to support sexual performance and healthy libido. Maintaining a healthy blood sugar balance is important since imbalances can negatively affect the kidneys due to increased oxidative stress. In animal studies, Cordyceps mushrooms appear to help maintain LDL cholesterol levels already within a healthy range. Cordyceps mushrooms may theoretically help relieve occasional stress, which has been associated with higher levels of oxidation. Cordyceps decrease oxidative stress while providing support to the psychoneuroimmunology processes in the body.

Turkey Tail

Turkey tail, also known by its scientific names Trametes versicolor, Coriolus versicolor, or Polyporus versicolor, gets its name from its appearance: flat, fan-shaped, multicolored rings of the mushroom that look much like a turkey’s tail. T. versicolor is a common fungal species of the basidiomycetes class, found growing on logs, stumps, or dead trunks of deciduous trees (e.g., oak or birch) and some conifers (e.g., fir and pine trees) in North America, Asia, and Europe.

Benefits

Traditional medicine practitioners have used turkey tail for millennia. The fungus provides health and long life benefits if consumed regularly. A few of the benefits of turkey tail include: removing toxins, increasing energy, removing excessive fluid, strengthening the organs responsible for the immune system, and supporting liver, lung and spleen function. Adaptogenic properties, supports the immune system, supports a healthy inflammation response, protects DNA from damage, supports gut health, supports liver health, improves athletic performance, may support blood sugar balance, and benefits pets.

Reishi

Reishi is a type of polypore: a woody type of mushroom that grows from trees and whose underside is smooth and composed of thousands of tiny pores, rather than gills. Polypores are also called bracket mushrooms or shelf mushrooms because of the way they sprout horizontally from trees.Reishi (also known as Lingzhi in China and Korea and “mannetake” in Japan) is simply the common name for the scientific genus of mushroom, Ganoderma. The Ganoderma genus of mushrooms is found all over the world, and from the study of the mushrooms’ various properties, estimates suggest there could be as many as 2,000 separate species . The world’s most common reishi species is Ganoderma lucidum—lucidum is Latin for “shiny,” which refers to the varnished appearance of the mushroom’s surface. The most commonly used Ganoderma species in mushroom supplements are also Ganoderma lucidum.

Benefits

Using modern research techniques, scientists have determined that reishi mushroom benefits for supporting longevity and wellness are indeed abundant. This fungus contains over 400 different bioactive compounds including triterpenoids, polysaccharides, nucleotides, sterols, steroids, fatty acids, proteins, peptides, and trace elements.they contain hundreds of bioactive compounds, mainly in the form of polysaccharides and triterpenes, that assist the body in numerous ways. The bioactive compounds in the reishi mushroom provide support to bodily systems that help them function at their best on a cellular level. Some of the health benefits you can find from reishi mushrooms: alleviate occasional stress, provide restful sleep and a calm mind, support lung and respiratory health, promotos balanced blood sugar levels, immune system support, and lower urinary tract support.

Chaga

Although people will generally refer to it as “chaga mushroom,” chaga is NOT actually a mushroom. What we call chaga is the common name for a sterile conk or canker that forms after a hardwood tree has been infected by the parasitic fungus Inonotus obliquus (or I. obliquus). As a parasite, I. obliquus has a one-sided relationship with its host tree. Its enzymes cause the simultaneous decay of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin from the heartwood of the living host. The breakdown of the heartwood weakens the tree’s infrastructure, allowing for what we call “chaga” to protrude from within the tree.

Benefits

The chemical composition of chaga was first studied by German-born chemist and pharmacist Johann Georg Noel Dragendorff in 1864. Since then, scientific analyses have revealed a diverse array of over 200 different bioactive metabolites. Many of these can support human health, including: Polysaccharides (including beta-glucans), Melanins, Triterpenes, Benzoic acid derivatives, Ergosterol and ergosterol peroxide, Sesquiterpene, and Hispidin. Of these, the polysaccharides are the most active compounds in chaga. Other benefits of chaga include: provides a boost of antioxidant, aids in digestion, supports healthy inflammation response, it’s an adaptogen, balances blood sugar, helps with muscle fatigue, benefits the immune system, benefits the skin, and supports healthy brain functioning.

Maitake

Also known as hen of the woods, maitake mushrooms are a type of edible fungi that are native to China but are also grown in Japan and North America. Commonly found in clusters at the base of maple, oak or elm trees and can grow to be over 100 pounds. The maitake mushroom has a long history in its use as both a culinary and medicinal mushroom. This beneficial food has a unique, frilly appearance, a delicate texture and an earthy flavor that works well in many different dishes, from burgers to stir-fries and beyond. Not only that, but these medicinal mushrooms have also been associated with a wide variety of health benefits, from regulating blood sugar to dropping cholesterol levels. They are also considered adaptogens, meaning that they contain powerful properties that can help naturally restore and balance the body to promote better health.

Benefits

Maitake mushrooms are low in calories but contain a small chunk of protein and fiber, plus B vitamins, such as niacin and riboflavin, and beneficial beta glucan, which has immune-boosting effects. When consumed as part of a healthy, well-rounded diet, maitake mushrooms may help stabilize blood sugar levels to sidestep these negative symptoms. In recent years, several promising studies have researched the potential connection between the maitake mushroom and cancer. Although more research is needed, some studies suggest that maitake mushrooms could help naturally lower cholesterol levels to keep your heart healthy. Maitake contains beta glucan, a polysaccharide found in fungi that supports healthy immune function, among other health benefits. Some research suggests that maitake mushrooms may be therapeutic against PCOS and could help combat common issues like infertility. Regularly consuming maitake can help reduce blood pressure to prevent high blood pressure symptoms.

Shitake

shiitake mushroom, (Lentinula edodes), edible and medicinal wood-dwelling fungus of the family Marasmiaceae. Native to East Asia, the shiitake mushroom is among the most commonly cultivated fungi in the world.Like other members of the genus Lentinula, shiitake mushrooms feed as saprotrophs on the deadwood of broad-leaved trees, especially oaks and various other trees. Commercially grown fungi are usually cultivated on logs, sawdust blocks, or sawdust pellets. The fruiting bodies of these fungi are generally light-coloured to reddish brown, with a convex pileus (cap) supported by a fibrous stipe (stalk). The pileus can be 8–15 cm (3–6 inches) in diameter and features white gills on the underside.

Benefits

Certain components of the shiitake mushroom have hypolipidemic (fat-reducing) effects, such as eritadenine and b-glucan, a soluble dietary fiber that’s also found in barley, rye and oats. Studies have reported that b-glucan can increase satiety, reduce food intake, delay nutrition absorption and reduce plasma lipid (fat) levels. results suggest that consuming the mushrooms improved cell effector function and improved gut immunity. They also show a reduction of inflammation due to mushroom consumption. Research suggests that shiitake mushrooms help fight cancer cells and the lentinan in shiitakes helps heal chromosome damage caused by anticancer treatments. This suggests shiitakes are potential cancer-fighting foods. Shiitake mushrooms have sterol compounds that interfere with the production of cholesterol in the liver. They also contain potent phytonutrients that help keep cells from sticking to blood vessel walls and forming plaque buildup, which maintains healthy blood pressure and improves circulation.A 2011 study at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in London tested shiitake’s antimicrobial effects on gingivitis, a preventable disease that involves inflammation of the gums due to the buildup of a microbial biofilm at the gingival margin.
